What it is

A not-for-profit ski and summer resort tucked inside Kitchener’s east side: 14 trails and six lifts with full snowmaking and night skiing in winter, then zip lines, mountain-bike trails, disc golf, climbing, tennis and beach volleyball when the snow goes. It has taught a large share of the region’s population to ski, one Saturday-morning lesson at a time.

Why locals rate it

A ski hill you can reach in fifteen minutes from anywhere in the tri-cities changes what winter feels like. Chicopee isn’t pretending to be Blue Mountain — the vertical is modest — but as a place to learn, to keep kids outdoors all season, or to get twenty runs in on a Tuesday night after work, it’s unbeatable, and the not-for-profit mandate keeps pricing honest. The summer flip is the underrated half: the zip line and trail network turn the same hill into a warm-weather answer, and the tube-and-paddle combos with the nearby Grand River outfitters make for a legitimately great full day.

What to do first

Winter first-timers should book a lesson package — the learning progression here is the region’s best-oiled machine — while experienced skiers should aim for night sessions, when the hill is lit, quiet and fast. In summer, the zip line is the marquee run and the mountain-bike trail pass is the best-value sweat in the city.

Insider tip

Watch for the combo packages pairing Chicopee’s summer activities with a Grand River tube float — the two-stop day (morning on the hill, afternoon on the river) is the strongest summer itinerary on the east side, and the river outfitter is minutes away at the Freeport Bridge.

Heads-up

Manage alpine expectations: the vertical drop is about 60 metres, so this is a hill for learning, laps and convenience, not epic descents. Peak winter weekends bring lesson-program crowds and busy rental lines — night skiing is the local workaround.
