What it is
A heritage railway running vintage trains up the historic line between Waterloo and Elmira, with stops at the Northfield ION station, the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market platform and the village of St. Jacobs. The Heritage Hopper format is hop-on, hop-off: one pass, all-day freedom to get off, wander and catch a later run, operating on market days from spring through fall plus summer Tuesdays.
Why locals rate it
The Hopper quietly assembles the region’s best car-free day: ride from the ION connection to the market for the morning, hop to St. Jacobs village for shops and lunch, carry on to Elmira if the mood holds, and let the train handle every transition. The volunteer crews — retired railroaders and lifelong enthusiasts — narrate, conduct and charm in a way no commercial attraction replicates, and for kids the rumble-and-whistle of real vintage equipment beats any screen. Themed runs across the calendar give regulars fresh excuses to ride.
What to do first
Board at the Farmers’ Market platform on a Saturday, ride north to St. Jacobs village, and build the day around the hop-off stops — market first while it’s lively, village after for the calmer browse. Sit on the left side heading north for the better farm views, and let kids greet the crew; it makes their day on both sides.
Insider tip
The Northfield stop connects directly to the ION light rail, which means a genuinely car-free itinerary from anywhere on the LRT line — the region’s only public-transit-to-heritage-train handoff, and the smart move on market Saturdays when parking lots groan.
Heads-up
This is a seasonal, volunteer-run railway with a limited timetable — miss the last southbound and you’re calling a rideshare from Elmira. Screenshot the day’s departures before you hop off anywhere.
