Cambridge Mill
A restored 1860s grist mill over the Grand River — the region's most beautiful dining room and its most booked brunch.

What it is
A 19th-century stone grist mill on the banks of the Grand in downtown Galt, restored into a multi-level restaurant and event venue. Floor-to-ceiling windows hang the dining room directly over the river; the menu is upscale contemporary Canadian with a strong local-sourcing streak.
Why locals rate it
No table in Waterloo Region comes with a better view, and the building itself — limestone walls, timber, water on three sides — does something no interior designer can fake. Crucially, the kitchen doesn’t coast on it: mains are polished, the raw bar is legitimate, and Sunday brunch has become the region’s benchmark special-occasion morning. It’s where locals take out-of-towners to show the region off.
What to order
Sunday brunch if you can get it; otherwise a window-side dinner with whatever the kitchen is doing with local trout or beef that season. The patio in summer is its own event — drinks and appetizers at golden hour over the river are the cheap way to get the full effect.
Insider tip
Request a window or river-side table in the reservation notes and book an off-peak time to actually get one — mid-week lunch is the secret version of this restaurant, same view at half the crowd.
Heads-up
It’s a major wedding and events venue, so weekend evenings can share the building with a reception, and brunch books out weeks ahead. Spontaneity is not this restaurant’s strength — plan it.
