What it is

Downtown Galt’s craft coffee roaster, holding the corner of Ainslie Street South since 2012 — an owner-run café and roastery pouring its own beans (the MADCAT espresso is the house signature) in a room that functions as the neighbourhood’s unofficial living room and meeting hall.

Why locals rate it

Monigram is proof that a great café is a social institution wearing a coffee shop’s clothes. The roasting is legitimately good — bold, approachable profiles refined over more than a decade — but the reason Galt is loyal is the hospitality: baristas who remember orders, owners on the floor, and a room where city councillors, artists and river-walkers cross-pollinate. As downtown Cambridge has come up around it — Gaslight District a few blocks one way, the refurbished main strip the other — Monigram has stayed the constant everyone routes their morning through.

What to order

A MADCAT espresso drink is the signature order — it’s built for milk, so the latte shows it off. Take a bag home; the roast dates are honest and the beans are the region’s most giftable Cambridge souvenir. Baked goods rotate from local partners and sell through by afternoon.

Insider tip

It’s positioned perfectly for the Galt walking circuit: coffee here, then the riverfront, the Bankers Corners strip and the Gaslight District are all within ten minutes on foot. Weekday mid-mornings get you the room at its convivial best.

Heads-up

Weekend peak hours outgrow the seating, and the kitchen is a café’s, not a brunch restaurant’s — come for exceptional coffee with a pastry, not a full meal, and you’ll leave a regular.
