What it is

A “gaming gym” on Pinebush Road in Cambridge: eleven interactive game rooms — laser mazes, climbing walls, light-chasing grid floors, hoops challenges — that teams of two to five play in all-you-can-play timed sessions, wearing wristbands that track scores and level progression across the building.

Why locals rate it

Activate cracked the code on active entertainment: it’s a video game you play with your entire body, and the effect on a group is immediate — competitive friends turn feral, sedentary friends forget they’re exercising, and everyone leaves comparing scores. The eleven-room variety is the retention engine; when one game type burns out, the next room resets the energy, and the levelling system gives repeat visits a progression hook most attractions lack. It’s the highest-energy-per-dollar hour in Cambridge and scales cleanly from a date to a full corporate outing rotating through rooms in squads.

What to do first

Start with the grid-floor games — they’re the signature Activate experience and the best introduction to how the wristband scoring works — then alternate physical rooms (climb, hoops) with mental ones (laser, memory games) to pace the sweat. Wear athletic shoes and clothes you can actually move in; this is not a stroll-through attraction.

Insider tip

Book the first session of the day on weekends — rooms are empty enough to replay favourites back-to-back without waiting, which effectively doubles your game count for the same price. Hydrate like it’s a workout, because it is one.

Heads-up

The all-you-can-play format has a hidden tax: on busy evenings, popular rooms develop internal waits, trimming your effective play time. And genuine mobility limitations matter here — several rooms demand crawling, jumping or climbing, so mixed-ability groups should plan around which rooms work for everyone.
