What it is

A specialty coffee roaster and café near downtown Kitchener where the roasting program is the star: single origins and blends with names like Paper Tiger, Thunder Peel and Nightmare Hippy Girl, served in a brick-and-timber room and stocked on an increasing number of the region’s café shelves.

Why locals rate it

Smile Tiger pulls off the hardest trick in specialty coffee: total seriousness about the product, zero seriousness about itself. The roasts are genuinely excellent — bright, well-developed, dialled in daily — but the tiger-and-lightning branding and the deadpan bean names keep the experience playful where other roasters go reverent. The room has become a creative-class clubhouse for the Victoria Street corridor, and the wholesale reach (their bags keep turning up behind other cafés’ counters) is the industry’s own endorsement.

What to order

A pour-over of whatever single origin the bar recommends is the full experience; the espresso blend handles milk drinks beautifully. Leave with a bag — Thunder Peel for espresso at home, or whatever seasonal roast has the most ridiculous name, which is usually also the most interesting coffee.

Insider tip

The roastery does small-batch releases that sell out quietly — if you develop a favourite, buy two bags, because it may rotate off before you’re back. Check their online shop between visits; they ship.

Heads-up

The espresso menu runs specialty-purist — if your order is a triple-vanilla-extra-sweet situation, expect gentle resistance and a better suggestion. Seating can also fill fast at peak; it’s a small room with a big reputation.
